Observations from the President

I am continually amazed at what Briad employees accomplish for charity through their hard work and generosity. Over the past few months, many of you have participated in charitable events such as the T.G.I. Friday’s Bartender Championships, various Bike Marathons and Walk-a-Thons, the Blue Jean Ball as well as our upcoming annual Charity Golf Outing.

These events raised funds for many worthwhile charities, including the Children’s Miracle Network and the National Adoption Center. In addition to these special events, many of you consistently volunteer in your communities, provide free food and coupons to local schools, hospitals and other worthy organizations as well as support local sports teams and fundraising efforts.

Briad employees are part of a rich American tradition of touching the lives of others. Every year, Americans donate more than $200 billion to charities. But what’s most remarkable is that 75% of these contributions are from people contributing individually, just as each of you often do. The personal reasons leading to such generosity are as vast as the numbers of charities we support.

For example, Andrew Carnegie’s passion for building libraries began when he was a boy. He and his brother, along with other friends, were invited to use the private library of a Colonel Anderson. Carnegie returned the Colonel’s generosity later on by using his wealth to establish free libraries across the country. Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy’s restaurants and an adopted child, donates substantial time and money to adoption causes. Joan Kroc, whose husband founded McDonald’s, Inc., gave $80 million to the Salvation Army because one of her fondest memories was of her husband dressing up as Santa every Christmas and collecting donations for the Salvation Army. I’m certain each of you has a special story behind the charities you support.

George Eliot said, "We make a living from what we get. We make a life from what we give." Donating your time and money through charitable giving is one way that we make the lives of others count. And in making the lives of others count, we make our own lives count. Thank you for continuing to put your generosity to work.

On May 31 another celebratory ribbon was cut as Briad and Wendy's International executives joined the store staff and distinguished representatives of the community at the grand opening of Wendy's in Forked River, New Jersey. The store, located near the Jersey Shore, had stellar opening day receipts - among the highest for any Briad Wendy's opening. And, as the summer progressed into fall, the store and its staff continued to do a great job of providing what Dave Thomas has described as the "basics" of this business: "Clean restaurants, good service, people being nice to people and giving people better food at a better price."
