Recently, Brad asked if I would take on the responsibility of contributing the "Observations" columns for VISION. The following is the first of these, and I look forward to sharing with you in future issues of this publication. On Tuesday, September 11, life as we knew it in America ended. That morning, our freedoms were used against us. All of us at Briad have been deeply affected by the tragic events of that day. Our thoughts and prayers especially during this holiday season continue to be with families who mourn their lost loved ones as well as with those engaged in military efforts to preserve and protect our freedoms. |

During the week following this tragedy, President George W. Bush reminded us of how adversity introduces us to ourselves. "This is true of a nation as well," he continued. "In this trial, we have been reminded and the world has seen that our fellow Americans are generous and kind, resourceful and brave." What is true for a nation is also true for a company. The success of our third annual charity golf outing, which raised approximately $40,000 for the Childrens Miracle Network and the National Adoption Center, is just one example of the continued generosity and kindness of Briad employees, vendors and business associates. Conservative estimates indicate that the tragedy in New York City alone left 1500 children without one or both parents. Causes that benefit children still need our support. I have also been touched by the renewed patriotism symbolized by the countless displays of the American flag in Briad restaurants as well as in neighborhoods where our employees live. Closest to my heart, however, are the efforts many of you have made to go the extra mile to ensure that our customers feel welcome and secure during this time of uncertainty. Now, more than ever, Briad offers safe community havens where loved ones, friends and neighbors can take their minds off news events and renew their hearts and spirits. Before September 11, the heartland of America was located somewhere west of the Mississippi River. Today thats no longer the case. Our heartland is located anywhere where Americans gather together in gratitude. That one of those gathering places might be a Briad restaurant gives me great pride. Thank you for working so hard to serve our customers. By standing together, we are helping to heal a country that has given us and will continue to give us the freedoms we love and cherish. |
